When to sell?

expired domain portfolio

For some time now I have been recieving numerous offers from individuals and businesses alike, and I always ask myself the same question. "Will I regret this in a few months?". Up until now I have always opted to hold onto my portfolio and continue to build, but when will the right time be? When should I stop pushing my luck? Will domain and traffic values continue to rise?

There are many ways to answer these questions and I am sure many of our readers have different views. On the upside if I would have sold my current portfolio just 2 years ago I probably would have recieved $270,000, holding onto it for just those two years has proven to be a good move since domain and traffic values have continued to rise during this period. Many factors come into play when discussing the rise in values placed on domains and traffic. These same values could come into effect if you or I hold our portfolios for just a day too long.

One of these factors has been click fraud. As in any form of business we see our share of fraud, which hurts the entire industry. Up until this point that fraud has been kept to a minimum, but who’s to say that tomorrow, someone won’t get out his/her bed, have an idea to defraud thousands of advertisers and cause keyword bids to plummet? This person may not realize or even care about the future ramifications that this may cause the online economy. The advertisers will only continue to bid if the traffic converts. Will you or I be caught with a pocket full of domains or money in the bank?

Another factor that played a major part in improving click values has been the PPC search engines, such as Domain Sponsor, Fabulous, and many more, continuing to improve upon their models, results pages, and partnerships. The bar can only rise so far, until advertisers reach their advertising limit. This is understandable because an advertiser can only pay so much of a percentage of their profit per sale to remain making a profit. When will we reach this point?

Since we have already discussed putting a value on your portfolio in a past article, now my question to you is, when do you sell?
