Reemergence of the old domain appraisal scam

March 6th, 2008

Domain Appraisal

In recent years domain owners have seen many different scams, we have become accustomed to receiving these scam-ish type e-mails and print mail.  The scale it seems to be reemerging, is the one that involves someone e-mailing you with interest to buy your domain.  If you reply with interest, they will request that you have a domain appraisal done to verify the value of the domain name.  The potential buyer either owns the appraisal company or as an affiliate, and has no intention of actually purchasing your domain.  Domain Name Wire brought this to my attention, by posting about a few recent comments of the reemergence of this old scam. According to their site, the latest scam e-mails are signed “Andreas Winksi” or “Ronald Winski” and use many different company names, including TNG technologies and PHR Systems.  An example provided by DomainNameWire.com is below:

Hello domain owner,
I’m checking sites with domains for sale from time to time.  By my opinion, (your domain).com can generate income.  What is your price?  We are working on software market.  Reselling gives us a good income opportunity but it does not have relation to our main business.

Looking forward to do business with you.

Regards,
Ronald Winski
Vice President
PHR Systems

If you receive one of these scam type e-mails please do not reply.  Or if you do decide to have fun with the scammer, egg a little bit and tried to get them excited believing that you have multiple domains that you were going to get an appraisal for.  I think it would be enjoyable to put the shoe on the other foot, and at the same time keep them busy from being able to pull of scams on unknowing domain owners.

Americans mixed about constant Net access

March 5th, 2008

According to a new poll conducted by a telephone survey of 1,066 American adults by pollster.  Americans are enthusiastic yet scared of constant net access.  Americans enjoy using their mobile video and high definition broadband but at the same time are intimidated by the fact that big brother could be watching.  53% of the people that responded to the poll said that they would switch from cable or satellite to IPTV if they had access to the same content.  64% of the people that responded to the poll with children under 18, said they believe that TVs in cars would be a useful way to entertain their kids, but 70% still wouldn’t subscribe if given the opportunity.  81% of the people surveyed said that they thought that it was not a good idea for children have access to mobile television on their cell phones.  And only 20% of the people that were surveyed said that high-quality TV service on their mobile devices and computers were resulted in there watching more television.  70% of the people said that it is possible to become addicted to handheld devices and that it is rude to actually use these devices when it meetings or during family functions.  And surprisingly 88 percent of the people that were surveyed actually said that they thought that the ban of a Internet enabled devices while driving should be implemented.  The highest statistic of all was that 89 to 90% of the 1066 Americans that were surveyed believed that it videos cell phone calls and high quality live TV on the Internet will be prevalent in the next five years.

Asking for it?

March 5th, 2008

 ask jeeves ask.com

Ask.com has finally decided to stop chasing Internet search leader Google, and will focus more on being a women’s question and answer site.  By doing so ask.com will have to lay off 40 employees that is 8% of its workforce.  The press release that ask.com recently released, stated that it will focus more on how these recipes children’s homework and other concerns of women.  Ask.com has spent a long time chasing search leader Google and according to calm score they have only reached the rank of fifth and search engine traffic in the US with only a 4.5% market share.  It will be interesting to see how well ask can return back to the truths of trying to fill that need in the industry, and how well the market will react to not having as.com is a search engine.
