Domain Auction Strategies
First I would like to apologize for not writing over the last few days. I had a trade show to do out of town, and had expected to access the internet during the day via my laptop, but found out upon arriving that there was no access in the area. Boy was I in the boonies.
The one good thing that did come from not being able to access the net, came from taking security precautions prior to the trip. The night before my trip, I decided to backorder domains expiring in the next few days and place proxy bids for domains that had already been caught in the daily drops. I visited pool.com snapnames.com enom.com and namewinner.com. Preordered all domains that were to be deleted for april 2nd and 3rd, then made a list of all domains for each of these services of domains that I was already participating in auctions for, that would be ending while I was out of town.
I figured the best way to place my proxy bids was to first estimate visitors and value on each of the domains that I was hoping to win. I had already researched these domains prior to pool catching them, and prior to backordering them, so all I had to do was look at my previous notes (I generally keep these notes until the domains have completed auctions). My list included:
sandysleather.com
slowcookerrecipes.net
teenarchive.com
I checked namewinner.com and saw the predrop bids on these domains, placed a bid on these domains, slightly above the namewinner bids, and expected to be outbid while out of town, my intention was to be able to participate in phase 2 of the auctions at pool, and then bid accordingly on the day that the auctions ended. Without internet access I was not able to do that, but was very surprised to find out upon my return that I had won each of these domains at my proxy bid.
I do not normally bid with this cushion, because i do not trust the pool two phase model. I ended up winning the auctions for each of these domains without having placed another bid. Now the question arises, Is it better to bid your maximum at pool in phase one or better to attempt to slip into phase two and then outbid the other bidders on the last day?
